Canadian Indigenous artist Wendy DesChene graduated with an MFA in Painting from Tyler School of Art and immediately incorporated materials that would support activism. "Kawii Otinum" translates to "Reclaim" in Michif, the distinctive language of the native Métis in North America.
This presentation juxtaposes Thirion’s theory of waged work as unhealthy with artworks by surrealist artists that associate modern work tools such as the sewing machine with sexual pleasure. For the interwar French surrealist group, the wage labor imperative could be subverted through the collective embrace of a different kind of compulsive drive, that of Eros.
John Hitchcock is a contemporary artist and musician based out of Madison, Wisconsin, and originally from Medicine Park, Oklahoma. He currently works in multimedia including neon, textiles, printmaking, sound, and video to reclaim narratives of resilience and survival.
Taro Takizawa is an artist who focuses on printmaking, wall vinyl installations, drawings and 2D designs. He is fascinated with blending the boundaries of contemporary studio practice and traditional processes, printmaking and installations, influenced by traditional Japanese patterns from textile designs, architecture and crafts.
Marianne Vitale (b. 1973) is an artist living and working in New York City. She graduated with a BFA from the School of Visual Arts, NY (1996). Her practice combines mediums with a focus on sculpture. She has been described as a surveyor, under-taker, and soothsayer of hard truths, conveyed poetically.
The Senior Thesis Honors Program in Studio Art is designed to enable senior studio art majors to pursue serious and substantial work that may qualify them to graduate "with honors" or "with highest honors." This work constitutes the Honors Thesis and is presented in an exhibition with a written statement concerning the work.
Join us at Sloane Art Library on Monday, March 4 from 2 to 5pm for a communal updating of Wikipedia entries on subjects related to gender, art, and feminism. We will provide tutorials for the beginner Wikipedian, reference materials, and light refreshments.
