Newest faculty member Martin Wannam is one of the artists chosen for the XXIII Bienal de Arte Paiz in Guatemala.

From their website:

“Fundación Paiz is very excited about the twenty-third edition of the Bienal de Arte Paiz, which will take place from July 13 to 30, 2023, with an outstanding curatorial team made up of Francine Birbragher (USA) and Juan Canela (ESP).

The curatorial team focused on creating an inclusive platform to open dialogue in the region because they noticed that spaces where ideas and thoughts are shared are important to nurture art.

In 2022, a public call was held to select national and international artists. Thanks to this, a very diverse exhibition was built. We are looking for new ways to present art so that it reaches more people!

In addition to the exhibitions, we will have different activities such as conservatories, workshops, and meetings that promote spaces for collective learning. Having your participation is the most important thing!”

Professors Pérez-Méndez and Marzán will walk you through the experience and the courses they’ve developed for this UNC Faculty-Led Program, which is scheduled to take place from May 15 – June 23, 2023. Emeritus Professor Mary Sturgeon’s new book The Gymnasium Area: Sculpture (Corinth XXIII.1) was published in December of 2022 and is now available for purchase.

Volume XXIII in the Corinth series is dedicated to the finds from the Gymnasium Area, excavated between 1965 and 1972 by James R. Wiseman and the University of Texas at Austin. Fascicle XXIII.1 presents the marble sculpture, 126 pieces dating between the 6th century B.C. and 5th century A.D. and found in or near a variety of built features, including the ornately decorated Bath-Fountain complex. Among the sculptural finds are portraits of athletes and civic officials and depictions of Dionysos, Hermes, and Aphrodite and the nymphs. Herms and statue bases also form part of the assemblage. This corpus grants us insight into the sculptural practices after the founding of the Roman colony at Corinth, and critical knowledge concerning display context, reuse, and the deposition of sculpture at a gymnasium in a large regional center of the eastern Mediterranean.

Ph.D. candidate Jennifer Wu will be delivering a lecture, “Metapaintings in Tudor England,” sponsored by the UNC Medieval-Renaissance Colloquium. The event will take place Thursday, January 19, 2023 at 5:15 PM in Greenlaw 526B.

Greetings! I was away in the UK last year on a Fulbright Scholar Award — Our Disappearing Darkness and Recreating Prehistoric Night — and am continuing to work on it now that I’m back in the U.S. I will be using the night images I created last winter in Cornwall of prehistoric megaliths as part of an art installation piece to evoke a bodily experience of darkness as counterpoint to the ubiquitous light pollution we experience at night now, with its deleterious effects on body, mind, and soul.

I’m presently collecting people’s stories of night and/or darkness to incorporate into the piece. And for that, I’d love to hear from you! It could be just a feeling you once had in the dark, or it could be a podcast’s worth of story. No experience is too small or too big! I look forward to hearing whatever you have to tell me about your experiences of night (or darkness–several people have mentioned cave experiences to me). We can do it in person if you’re in central North Carolina, or we can do it virtually. Just reply to this email, and we can set up a time ❤️. Or if you’re an online calendar buff, I’ve just created a “Let’s Talk Darkness!” Calendly sign-up calendar for Thursday, Dec 8th—Tuesday, Dec 13th as a test to see if that format is useful to people.

In other news, the tomato “holiday” cards are back!  The Studio Store, after a year’s hiatus, is back with the End of Season Tomatoes card as well as many others. Before the end of the year, I will likely be adding a few vintage prints from my studio flat files as well as some artist proofs of recent images to the store. Through video and audio installation, GOLF explores the relationship between privatized space and loss in all its forms. In this one-day pop-up exhibition and live sound performance at Lump Gallery, we examine the history and culture of golf in marking boundaries of class, race, and gender through its practice of exclusivity and hetero-patriarchy. GOLF immerses the viewer in the past, present, and future of ecological disaster.

The one-day pop-up exhibition is part of a larger exhibition project by Bill Thelen, called Love Letter, in which he invited different artists to take over the space for one-day events throughout Nov and Dec.
