We are seeking applications for the MFA Program in Studio Art at UNC-Chapel Hill. We are a small, rigorous, fully funded program focused on studio practice informed by research and theory. Some key aspects of our program include:

• We provide full funding for tuition and stipends for all students through Teaching Assistantships and Teaching Fellowships.
• All students work in large, private white box studios.
• Our program offers a small faculty-to-student ratio.
• Students work within a vibrant intellectual and creative community at UNC-Chapel Hill, a Research One public university with access to courses and faculty across disciplines at the university.

Program Details:

Two-year Non-Media Specific Program
The Art Department at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) is currently welcoming MFA Studio Art applications for entry in the fall of 2022.

The MFA Program at UNC is a dynamic and intensive program with an established history of excellence. With a curriculum that focuses on studio practice driven by research and theory, the program at UNC also provides pedagogical training in university teaching. Set in the heart of the Research Triangle in North Carolina, UNC is a Research 1 university whose vibrant intellectual and creative communities offer a stimulating environment in which to develop a rigorous studio art practice.

Funding & Teaching Opportunities
We are committed to equity in art education. To that end, we offer Teaching Assistantships and Graduate Assistantships to all accepted students, which provide tuition waivers and stipends for a fully funded first-year experience. In addition,  we offer Teaching Fellowships for all students in good academic standing. Other fellowship opportunities include Merit Fellowships based on excellent academic and artistic achievement and the Morrison Fellowship in Painting/Drawing, which provides an extra stipend and free housing with an accompanying studio located on the main campus.

Faculty & Extended Programming
All students work in large, private, white-box studios. Our faculty of artists and art historians work closely with graduate students in developing the exhibitions in our Allcott Gallery and programming of the Hanes Visiting Artist Lecture series. These programs bring some of the most prominent contemporary critics, curators, artists, and thinkers to campus. Additionally, our Visiting Arts Professional program invites curators to visit the graduate students in their studios, allowing them to speak with each visiting professional about career concerns and opportunities in a candid setting.

As internationally renowned artists, intellectuals, and educators, the program’s diverse faculty brings a wide array of interdisciplinary and distinct perspectives.  This diversity of expertise supports every student’s field of inquiry. Studio Faculty members work one-on-one and in group critique with MFA students each semester.

In addition to developing their practice, students in the Studio Art MFA program enroll in a teaching practicum that prepares them for the classroom experience awarded to eligible students in their second year. All MFA students thus have the opportunity to gain experience teaching introductory art classes across a range of disciplines.

Our facilities include:

• Three (3) Beam Makerspaces that support Woodworking, Metalworking,  Electronics, 3D Printing, Laser Engraving, Cutting and Printing, Cad/Cam Routing, sewing, embroidery, and vinyl cutting.)
• Art Lab (Wood and Metal Fabrication Studios, Ceramics Studio)
• Hanes Art Center Digital Media Lab (Medium and Large Format Digital Photography Printers, Photography and Video Production Cage)
• Hanes Art Center Wet Photography Lab
• Hanes Art Center Photography Shooting Studio
• Alumni Sculpture Garden (opportunities for student commissions)
• Hanes Art Center Installation Room (180 sq. ft. lab with overhead lighting)
• John C Henry Printmaking Studio  (Full service 3300 sq ft printmaking lab)
• Drawing and Painting Studios

Our students have access to a wide range of other facilities within UNC, including its many libraries, its science and computer programming laboratories, the Ackland Art Museum, and the Allcott Gallery.
