The John and June Allcott Undergraduate Travel Fellowship in the amount of $3,000.00 enables an art history or studio art student to travel in pursuit of an independent, career-related project within the United States or Abroad.

Currently-enrolled UNC-CH sophomores, juniors, and seniors are eligible to apply, but preference may be given to Department of Art majors and to juniors. Students are encouraged to work with a faculty advisor in the Department of Art in preparing their applications. Applicants must be available for interviews at UNC-CH during the spring semester.

The fellowship amount is awarded prior to the end of the spring semester. The recipient is expected to:

  1. use the funding during the summer immediately following the award for the purpose described in her/his project proposal
  2. present a written and oral report in the fall semester immediately following the trip
  3. plan to be enrolled at UNC-CH during the fall semester immediately following the trip

The strongest candidates for this award are those who demonstrate their interest in independent study projects that are tied to the student’s personal and career aspirations. Applicants may also indicate their need for financial assistance to pursue the projects they propose. Motivation for travel-study as a learning experience and excitement about the project are also significant factors. Strong consideration will be given to candidates whose university records demonstrate the student’s serious approach academic pursuits. Projects should be well thought-out and researched for feasibility and cost factors.

Application forms are available in the Department of Art office. Completed application forms should be submitted to the Student Services Manager in the Department of Art by 5:00 p.m. on date specified for that year’s competition. From the written applications submitted, the Selection Committee will choose finalists who will then interview with the Committee before the end of March.
