The John and June Allcott Gallery: Krysta Sa, MFA Thesis Exhibition, Intimate Economies
April 26 @ 7:00 pm - April 27 @ 7:00 am
Gallery Hours: The gallery is currently closed to visitors. However, Hanes Art Center is open to the campus community and exhibitions can be viewed through the gallery’s front glass wall.
Intimate Economies is a 12-hour performance that will be live-streamed on the pink full moon Monday, April 26 from 7 pm-7 am EST at twitch.tv/primordial_soak.
Soaking is an act of collaborative renewal. In bathing/steam traditions, absorption and exfoliation occur simultaneously and often without separation. The blurriness between these states, between self and water, past and present, receiver and transmitter, challenge the binaries found in care and consumption. Intimate Economies is a performance and installation that considers the relationships that are generated in the blurry boundaries between preservation and exfoliation. This tension offers a space for transformational knowledge and embodiment. Working directly with my own body, I will be performing a series of exfoliations and ingestions while live-streaming treatments with herbs, objects, images, salts, soaps, blood, and urine. During these treatments, I will also be chatting, reading, doing tutorials, and performing virtual steams and soaks for streamers on the primordial_soak twitch channel. The performance will result in the production of an ingestible essence that will be available for purchase at primordiasoak.biz.
Krysta won a Student Arts Innovation Grant from Arts Everywhere and UNC Libraries to support this project.
