Hanes Visiting Artist Lecture Series: Marc Handelman

November 14, 2017 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

Marc Handelman is an artist working primarily in painting but also in installation, books, film/video and photography. His work explores the ways in which forms of rhetoric in landscape and nature surface in our visual culture and politics and continue to structure an array of ideological effects including the aestheticization and legitimization of forms of structural violence and oppression. He received his BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design with a concentration in art history and his MFA from Columbia University. He was a recipient of the Awards for Artists from Printed Matter in 2011, and is a current resident in the International Gagnef Artist in Residency Program in Sweden.

Handelman has exhibited extensively throughout the United States as well as internationally in such venues as PS1 MoMA, The Studio Museum in Harlem, Dieu Donne, The Orlando Museum of Art, The Royal Academy of Art (London), The Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts, The Saatchi Gallery, The Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, The American Academy of Arts and Letters, P!, and the Storefront for Art and Architecture among others. Handelman’s work has been reviewed in numerous publications such as The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, Artforum, The New Yorker, Art in America, Flash Art, Tema Celeste, Time Out New York, The New York Observer, Art in Review, The Boston Globe, Cultural Politics Journal, Art Press, Art Slant, The Financial Times, The Providence Journal, CIRCA, and BOMB, among others.

Handelman has taught extensively in the graduate programs of Bard College and Columbia University, the latter of which he has served as a graduate critic since 2010. He has also taught in numerous institutions including the graduate programs of Yale University, The School of Visual Arts, and Brooklyn College. Handelman was appointed Assistant Professor of Visual Arts at Mason Gross School of Art, Rutgers, in fall 2012. He is represented by Sikkema Jenkins & Co., New York City and Marc Selwyn Fine Art, Los Angeles.

An endowment established in 1983 through the generosity of Nancy and Robin Hanes supports the Art Department’s Visiting Artist Series. This important program brings both established and emerging artists to campus to discuss their work in public lectures and to offer individual critiques to our M.F.A. students.  The Hanes Visiting Artist series greatly enriches both our academic programs and our outreach to the wider community.  All lectures are free and open to the public.
