Hanes Visiting Artist Lecture Series: Lisa Oppenheim
April 3, 2018 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm
Lisa Oppenheim creates photographs and videos that connect historical imagery and techniques with the present moment. Her process often begins with online research, as a way to source images that she reinterprets using old and new technologies. Oppenheim also employs unusual materials as photographic negatives—such as fabric, lace, slices of wood– directly recording the objects’ specific textures to create near-abstract compositions. Through her experiments with analog darkroom and digital methods, Oppenheim gives photographic images new forms and new contexts, inviting us to question and to wonder.
Oppenheim was born in 1975 in New York City, where she currently lives and works. She received her BA from Brown University in 1998, and later and an MFA from the Milton Avery Graduate School for the Arts at Bard College in 2001. She also attended the Whitney Independent Study Program in 2003 and the Rijksakademie van beeldedne kunsten in Amsterdam in 2005. In 2014, Oppenheim was the recipient the AIMIA|AGO Photography Prize from the Art Gallery of Ontario and the Shpilman International Photography Prize from the Israel Museum. She has exhibited her work at institutions worldwide, such as the Kunstverein in Hamburg (2014), Grazer Kunstverein (2014), Mass MoCA (2014), and the 21er Haus in Vienna (2012). Notable exhibitions include New Photography 2013 at The Museum of Modern Art, ICP Triennial 2013, International Center of Photography, New York, Found In Translation, Deutsche Guggenheim, Berlin. Her work is held in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim Museum, The Getty Museum, the Israel Museum, and the MIT List Visual Arts Center.
An endowment established in 1983 through the generosity of Nancy and Robin Hanes supports the Art Department’s Visiting Artist Series. This important program brings both established and emerging artists to campus to discuss their work in public lectures and to offer individual critiques to our M.F.A. students. The Hanes Visiting Artist series greatly enriches both our academic programs and our outreach to the wider community. All lectures are free and open to the public.
