Hanes Visiting Artist Lecture Series: Angela Kelly

Political Geographies

Political Geography  examines political, cultural and social landscapes. Artists in this lecture series present diverse interpretations of geographic spaces, including psychogeography, and work through modes of mapping and representation, performance and social practice. These artists examine the spatial distribution and control of political processes and how geographic location and identity impact these processes and spaces. These artists are influenced by the study of laws and the effects on bodies in specific geographical environments, especially in relation to the behavior of other individuals and political bodies. Collectively, their work challenges ideas of space, place, ideology, energy, systems of power, agriculture, and dys/utopias.

Reception following the lecture

Originally from Belfast, N. Ireland, Angela Kelly came to the US from the UK to serve as a full-time Visiting Artist at the School of the Art Institute, Chicago. She earned an MA in Fine Art Photography from Columbia College, Chicago in 1989, and a Diploma in Creative Photography, Hons., from Trent Polytechnic (B.A. degree Nottingham Metropolitan University,) Nottingham, England in 1975, and a Dip. Ed. with distinction at Mary Ward College, University of Nottingham, in 1972. She has been teaching at the college level in England, Ireland and the US since 1975.

Her artwork is included in international collections worldwide, including: The Center for Creative Photography, Tucson; The Art Institute of Chicago; The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation; The Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago; The Historical Society, Chicago; The Arts Council of London, UK, as well as several private collections. She has received grants and fellowships from The Arts Council of London, UK, the Arts Mid-West National Endowment for the Arts, the Illinois Arts Council, the Focus Infinity Fund, as well as faculty development, FEAD grants, from RIT and a Chancellor’s artist in residence fellowship from the University of New Orleans.

Her curatorial work, Feminism and Photography: Three Perspectives on Photography, with Paul Hill and John Tagg, debuted at the Hayward Gallery, South Bank, London. She continued curating for another five years, as vice-chair of exhibitions at the notable Randolph St. Gallery, Chicago. Currently a full professor at RIT, Rochester, NY, she has served on the executive committees of the National Board of Directors of the Society of Photographic Education, on the International Fulbright Photography committee in NYC, as well photography panels at NYFA, NY and was the first female member of the photography panel of Arts Council of Great Britain.
