ARTS 391’s show, SUBTEXT intends to explore the historical use of visual type. This exhibition was born from an interest in human-machine interaction and how people recontextualize art through the lens of text. Typewriter art is the main focus of this exhibition, as well as references to text used in other artistic contexts. The development of this new form of folk art challenged the visual form of language by reinterpreting the use of symbols, letters, and punctuation. This exhibition includes works from artists with a variety of backgrounds through numerous decades. The works of the show will exist online, allowing the audience to explore the abbreviated use of visual type chronologically through an online book.

The online book has already gone live through Flipbook. The book should be available to view online as long as you have a device that is able to connect to the internet.

Information about the show can be found through our Facebook announcement or through our Instagram page (@nowhere391). Both of these posts also contain links to the online book.
