Show title: Extreme Vetting
Location: Focus Gallery, Windgate Center of Art + Design, University of Arkansas at Little Rock
Dates: October 29 – November 30
Extreme Vetting traces the roots of relationships between imaging technology, photographic representation, visual culture, and current and past attitudes towards the Othered. Every act of representation is an act of measurement and mapping of the body. Sometimes this power through representation is exercised overtly for the purposes of examination and control, but more often it is employed covertly and subliminally to generate and propagate cultures of bias and authority. At a time of polarizing political forces in the US but also across the world, hybrid and precarious identities fantasize technological utopias that may allow them to situate themselves- their bodies and their minds- outside of strict and binary geopolitical boundaries.
