Show dates May 4  – June 9,   2018

The Lovers is a large-scale video trilogy in twelve-parts which began while the artist Joy Meyer was in graduate school for studio art at UNC-Chapel Hill. The first part premiered at The Ackland Museum as part of the graduating MFA Show curated by Jeff Bell, titled Time Will Tell; Presenting the 2017 MFA Class.

The final project has been completed and will premiere at LUMP Projects in Raleigh, May 4 from 6-9pm as part of First Fridays.

The project will involve thirteen-channels of video and sound. The complete show will also consist of large-scale video installation, projections, faux fur rugs, neon signs, sound objects, and vintage TV sets.

The Lovers as a whole draws on speculative fiction, the tarot, philosophical theories of possible worlds, epistemology, and feminism to explore questions surrounding love and desire. In particular, this series of work raises questions about space, time, gender, and romantic love.

The show takes its name from the sixth card of the classic tarot deck. The Lovers also ponders the tarot and television as two forms of pictorial yet antiquated forms of myth-making.
