Double Wide: Petere Mystica Saecularia is a re-contextualization of the autonomous, modernist art gallery as a space for contemplation within our swiftly excursive and disposable society. It juxtaposes the highbrow environment and conceits of the art space with the lowbrow, fleeting detritus of our late capitalist lifestyles. In so doing it seeks to explore how these two worlds support and cannibalize each other as well as create space for an experience of mysticism in contemporary society.

Professor of Art History Cynthia Hahn teaches both early and late medieval art at Hunter College and The Graduate Center. Her courses focus on issues of production and meaning for both medieval and contemporary makers and audiences. She has published on material from the early Christian period to the Gothic, from across Europe--Italy to England to the Byzantine East.
