Hanes Visiting Artist Lecture Series: Photographer/Publisher Panel Discussion

October 30, 2014 @ 5:00 pm - 7:30 pm

Co-sponsored by the Sloane Art Library

Most photographers today have “gone digital”.  Their cameras are digital, they digitally edit their work, and they sell their photographs online through their own websites.  Yet, the printed photobook market is experiencing a resurgence, and collecting photobooks has never been hotter. Spurred by the convenience and relative low cost of print-on-demand and digital edition opportunities, it has become increasingly popular for photographers to self-publish books. Additionally, many new indie publishers and photography bookstores, both online and brick-and-mortar, have emerged in recent years.  It has become common for photographers to self-fund their book projects, sometimes with the aid of crowdsourcing.

Making and collecting contemporary photobooks can be quite rewarding, but both present challenges.  Our guest speakers will discuss the opportunities and economics of photobook publishing, offer advice for artists considering self-publishing or working with a publisher, and guide collectors where to look for the best new photobooks on the market today.

5pm  Larissa Leclair discusses titles selected from the Sloane Art Library’s collection of artists’ books and photobooks.  Hosted at the Sloane Art Library.

5:45pm  reception at the Ackland Art Museum

6:15pm  panel discussion (Larissa Leclair, Paul Soulellis, Taj Forer, Michael Itkoff) at the Ackland Art Museum
